Norton used to be a standalone buy once product, but no more - its antivirus system is by monthly dues subscription only - minimum 29.99 per month. There is no free version.
Avast provides pretty much all you would need for free - antivirus protection of your computer, emails and web browsers. (You may upgrade to get their ransomware shield and wi-fi inspector, but these are nothing I need.)
After testing the latest version of Norton antivirus in a trial version, compared to Avast, I find no real benefit to paying the Norton monthly fee. The Avast free version works just fine for everything I need. Just be sure to add Avast both to your system, and each of your browsers.
